Re: Radiation therapy billing code information needed

I had Blue Cross Blue Shield in Mich and they paid the bills. It was three and a half years ago and I don't have the codes readily available. Hospital billed just over 13,000 for ten treatments. Each Blue Cross policy is different even in the same state. My husband worked for them as a physician reviewer for a while. First talk to your doctor about the diagnostic codes . Then appeal up the chain.

Re: Radiation therapy billing code information needed

Thanks to everyone for their responses to my original post and all the CPT code information you have provided. As of right now, I'm not on the hook for any $$$ as Medicare says, "since you apparently did not expect to pay for the treatment ...you are not responsible" but I'm ever so curious why Medicare is turning my provider down and not paying for my RT. My provider actually checked with Medicare before the RT and was told it was covered. They are the most aggressive billers I've ever seen-- on my first visit to them they were able to successfully bill over $900 for my "Welcome to Medicare" physical including being able to bill $200 for "initial visit" and then another $200 for "established patient"--all in the first visit. They had a handout that explained that since they not only did the physical ($150 to "read" by EKG) but also wrote RXs for the meds I was currently taking, that constituted an "established patient" relationship-- and Medicare paid.

I wanted to have the info in case it ever becomes a problem and I get billed-- thanks again, this forum is the best!

Re: Radiation therapy billing code information needed

I think some billing cost differences for RT at different facilities could be due to different RT types, be it xray, or electron, or photon. I am no physician and am not sure, but I am seeing that proton RT may be significantly more expensive. But it may offer some benefits in terms of radiation target isolation as protons are heavier and may not pass through other tissues as much. I am just reading about such recently.

The clinic that did my RT just had their third--and I think final--appeal to Medicare to cover this procedure rejected. They're basically using the same codes that are used at Scripps-- how very, very weird.

To have your insurance cover Radiation Therapy in Germany did you have your primary care refer you to Germany or did you just go and have the treatment and then file. I'm not sure what to do.
